How to Rank Your WordPress Site From the Beginning

WordPress is an excellent tool combined with the right web hosting and it is available to anyone who is interested in creating their own website. It is free to use and it offers thousands of plugins, depending on what you are looking to do with the website. However, you also need to improve the search engine optimization of the website. Without the optimization, your website is only going to drop in the rankings.

To ensure your website is properly ranked, you need to follow through with some basic tips, and also avoid common pitfalls that may actually harm the overall ranking of your website.

Keywords

If you know anything about SEO, you probably know keywords play a very important role in how your website is listed on search engines and how people find your product, even your domain name plays a crucial part. However, the amount of times you use your keyword also plays an effect. You want your text to read naturally and you want it to appear in the headers of the website, but you don’t want it stuffed throughout the website where it reads in an awkward way. Chances are, you have probably read some text in other WordPress websites where it seems as if a certain word or phrase is used just far too often. When this is the case, search engines such as Google, Yahoo!, Bing and others actually penalize the website and reduce the rankings.

Perhaps a decade ago, you might have stumbled upon a website and, at the very bottom of the website, it listed a certain phrase a few dozen times. The website owner did this because search engines ranked websites simply by how often a key phrase appeared on the site. This no longer is the case, so while you do need to create and use very specific phrases that describe your website, you don’t want to go overboard and stuff the word into the site. This is something that will harm your website and reduce the chances of it being listed well on search engines. You can learn more about keyword usage here.

Images and Videos

Images and videos are very important when it comes to improving your search engine ranking. These help the ranking of your website as it helps list the website in both the image and video search fields on search engines. However, a common mistake is simply placing the image or video onto the WordPress website without any specific image title or description. You still use keywords to search for images, so you want these words tagged into the description and title of the images and videos. If you fail to provide this sort of information, your images and videos are not going to appear in the search fields for either pictures or videos. If you are going to use these kinds of visual aids, you need to make sure and tag the content with keywords.

Notify Search Engines

Sure, you can just post your content onto the Internet and, eventually, Google and others are going to find your website. However, this can take time. With the millions upon millions of websites out there and billions of pages, having one website cataloged and listed on search engines does not happen overnight. A common problem people do is just wait for Google and others to list the website. Instead, it is a much shorter process to actually notify the search engines of the website being up. From there, it takes far less time for the search engine to rank and list the website. Each search engine is going to be a bit different for having your WordPress site listed, but, for example, you want to go to Google/addurl and then copy and paste the URL into the provided space. Or you can do this directly in the webmaster tools under “Diagnostics > Fetch As Googlebot”. This way, the website is listed faster and is ranked quickly.
